Newcastle goalkeeper declined opportunity to join Manchester United on deadline day

According to reports, Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka rejected a deadline day loan move to Manchester United.

The Manchester Evening News claims that the Reds were prepared to accept Dubravka in exchange for Dean Henderson, with the Magpies keen to sign United’s second choice goalkeeper.

They already loaned third-choice keeper Freddie Woodman to Bournemouth on deadline day, but United’s conditions are interesting to say the least – because it didn’t look like Henderson was leaving on deadline day. There was very little coverage about a move.

Anyhow, Dubravka apparently rejected the opportunity to join United as back-up to David de Gea, and he started in Newcastle’s comeback win over Everton on Tuesday night.

While I understand United’s reason for needing a top-quality back-up option, like Henderson, I don’t see how he is going to benefit from this season unless De Gea picks up an injury at some point.

It won’t do him any good sitting on the bench unless you look at it from a selfish point of view, noting that he is under contract at United.

We’ve no idea what will happen in the summer.
