It sounds like Michael Carrick will be making some big changes as he takes charge of the first team for tonight’s Champions League clash against Villarreal.

The Reds are still trying to secure their place in the knockout stages but ultimately they need to avoid defeat tonight.

We are not expecting team news for another hour, although Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has heard that Michael Carrick is preparing some big changes for the game.

He tweeted: “Michael Carrick’s preparing some big changes for Manchester United starting XI vs Villarreal. Also, Donny van de Beek finally expected to start.”

Donny van de Beek is expected to start in the middle, a player who was often overlooked by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, while Carrick was part of that coaching staff.

It helps Van de Beek that Paul Pogba is out injured and we lacked a ball player in the middle from the start against Watford, which is why Solskjaer opted to bring on the former Ajax ace after the interval.

It now feels like some of the coaching staff didn’t agree with how Van de Beek was handled as a squad player from the moment he arrived.

The Netherlands international played well when he came on against Watford on Saturday, but the entire team will need to be better tonight.

Villarreal are no push overs!
