(Video) “That game was for Ole” – Michael Carrick happy with win after Sancho shines vs Villarreal

Michael Carrick spoke to BT Sport after Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Villarreal in the Champions League.

Three points were enough on the night to secure our place in the knockout stages of the competition to give Carrick a green light in his first match as a manager.

“It feels like that game was for Ole,” Carrick said at full-time, with the game played just days after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been dismissed as manager.

The players gave the response they needed and the one Solskjaer would’ve wanted to book their place in the next round.

It is unlikely that Carrick will take charge of many more Champions League games in the near future, but at least he has made sure of qualification for the next man to stand in the hotseat.

Carrick was also pleased with Jadon Sancho’s display as the England international got a rare start in the team. He was our most threatening player in attack and deserved his match-winning goal.

It was his first for the club, too.

“To finish it off with Jadon was brilliant, it was a big night for him,” he added.

Sancho will hope to build on this performance with Carrick and the next manager.

It looked like United should be doing more to find the English winger on the pitch.
