Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong identified as Paul Pogba’s replacement at Man Utd

Paul Pogba has less than one year remaining on his contract at Manchester United and an extension is looking increasingly unlikely, hence increasing reports as to who could replace the Frenchman.

Real Madrid star Federico Valverde has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, whilst Declan Rice remains a target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

According to new reports, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is on the radar at United, with the exciting Dutch midfielder seen as the perfect replacement for Pogba.

That’s according to the Independent, via The Metro, who add that new manager Xavi hasn’t been impressed by the midfielder in his first training sessions since taking charge at the club.

Barcelona’s financial troubles have been widely covered and the departure of De Jong would ease the pressure on the Catalan’s already sky-high wage bill.

There are complications to a deal, however. De Jong has five years remaining on his deal at Barcelona and any move would almost certainly demand an astronomical fee. It remains to be seen whether United are willing to break the bank for a new midfielder.
