United legend agrees with journalist that Anthony Martial is ‘bang average’

Neil Custis is a renowned journalist, covering Manchester United for The Sun. He featured on talkSPORT radio this week and shared a pretty unflattering opinion on Anthony Martial suggesting the Frenchman is “bang average”.

I know Anthony Martial had a dreadful season last year and there has been question marks over whether he will reach his full potential, but bang average is harsh considering the amount of ability he has.

Custis claims Martial has “probably had one good season” and adds that he’s “never seen a player look more disinterested.”

It’s mad to think that a year ago a lot of people would have called Luke Shaw bang average. After a mighty 18-months or so, he is rightly considered world-class – but his sheer ability is the reason United invested so much money in him in the first place. The egg finally cracked and maybe this season we will see the same happen with Martial.

Hear me out…

Marcus Rashford is bound to miss the start of the season if he has *that* operation, which could possibly open a door for Martial to shine when we need him. Jadon Sancho will be expected to hit the ground running and it has been years since United have had a proper right winger.

I think Custis is right when he says United fans wouldn’t shed a tear if Martial was sold. 100% right, but is this the market to cash in, or do we give a clearly talented football one more chance next season?

Manchester United legend Gordon Hill offered his thoughts on what Custis had to say, only to reveal that he is in total agreement with the journalist: “I agree with Neill 100%, what a lucky player to be picked up by United. Cash in on him, get what you can and invest in other players.”

The criticism could motivate him after a long summer off without the Euros to really worry about.

On top of that, Martial has had a chance to fully recover from the knock he sustained towards the end of the season, and with a full pre-season under his belt I see reasons to be optimistic.

Let us know in the comment section which side of the fence you are on? I, personally, wouldn’t rush into selling Martial but would listen to offers.
