Manchester United has confirmed that four academy players have been handed new numbers going into the 2021/22 season. That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, who say that their numbers on show for the first training session on Monday are likely to stick.
With many first-team regulars still either on vacation or involved in international tournaments, the first pre-season training session was made up of several academy players.
Teden Mengi, James Garner, Facundo Pellistri, and Tahith Chong were all out on loan last season but took part in the first session at the AoN Training Complex.
Joe Hugill, who had previously been spotted wearing the no89 shirt, almost halved his squad number by turning up with no52. Anthony Elanga had no56 on the back of his debut shirt in May but is now wearing no36. Dylan Levitt, who has returned early despite being involved in Euro 2020, wore no35 instead of no63.
Shole Shoretire is another youngster who made their debut under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season and the teenager has switched from no74 to no47. Tom Heaton, Manchester United’s first signing of the summer, was spotted wearing no22.

You do know it doesn’t actually mean anything. For years now we’ve had the odd player two sport numbers in the off season that won’t end up being on their shirts. Means nothing.
