Villareal star defender Pau Torres has come to the defence of David de Gea after the United goalkeeper missed the decisive penalty in last weeks Europa League final defeat. Torres, who scored his kick from 12 yards, impressed as ‘the yellow submarines’ were crowned champions.
After 21 penalties, all landing inside the back of the net, De Gea missed his penalty in what could be his final appearance for the club. But international teammate and United target Pau Torres insists that our goalie will get over the mishap as they set their sights on Euro triumph with Spain.
“He has a strong mind, I spoke with him after the game and this won’t affect him,” Torres is quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “It will stay in the past, I tried to encourage him as best as I could and told him not to worry about it because this summer he is going to lift a different trophy.”
Torres, who United have scouted extensively, impressed in the final and could play a vital role in Spain’s Euro campaign where he is joined by De Gea.
De Gea’s poor club form has seen him lose his place at his country’s first choice, with Luis Enrique picking Unai Simon over him for each of the last 7 games.
