Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour identifies Man United star as toughest-ever opponent

Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour has picked out Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay as the hardest opponent he has ever had to face.

Gilmour, 19, like McTominay, is a product of his side’s youth academy.

Since being awarded with his senior first-team debut in 2019, Gilmour has enjoyed an impressive rise in England’s top-flight.

Hotly tipped to go on to become of the Blues’ most talented central midfielders, Gilmour, who has already featured in 17 senior matches, appears to have all the potential in the world.

Despite taking in all the plaudits coming his way, the highly-rated teenager has recently taken the time to credit compatriot McTominay.

Speaking in a recent interview on Chelsea’s official YouTube channel, Gilmour has hailed McTominay and even went as far as to say he is the trickiest opponent he’s ever faced-off against.

“It was against Manchester United, actually,” the 19-year-old said. “It was Scott McTominay.

“I know he’s fellow Scottish and all that but he was so good, quick, strong and technically good. So, I think it was tough playing against him.

“He played really good, He was stopping everything in midfield and controlling the game.”

McTominay’s latest eye-catching performance came during the Red Devils’ mid-week 9-0 thrashing over Southampton.

After coming away unscathed from a vicious Alex Jankewitz tackle after just 79-seconds, the physical Scotsman went on to enjoy another hugely impressive performance.

Had it not have been for a simply brilliant attacking display from left-back Luke Shaw, McTominay would have arguably been recognised as the match’s ‘Man of the Match’.

Despite being pipped to the back-page’s headlines by Shaw, hearing such high praise from his domestic rivals is something all United fans should enjoy hearing.

McTominay really does have all the makings of a very important member of this United squad. There is no reason why the 23-year-old couldn’t go on to have the same effect as the likes of former midfielder Nicky Butt had under Sir Alex Ferguson.
