Man United allocate funds for Jadon Sancho but new transfer alternative identified

Jadon Sancho remains Manchester United’s priority target in the summer transfer window, despite the recent brilliance of Mason Greenwood on the right-flank.

United are currently 17 games unbeaten and are playing their best football since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took interim charge in December 2018.

But Solskjaer will know his squad still needs significant upgrades if they are to provide competition to Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.

And according to The Athletic, Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho remains this summer’s principle target as he looks to add strength in depth to his attacking options.

Laurie Whitwell’s report claims United have allocated a significant amount of funds to their pursuit of Sancho, who could take Solskjaer’s attack up a level next season.

It is believed United have been set an August 10 deadline by Dortmund to conclude the transfer.

Sancho has scored 17 times and laid on 16 assists in 25 Bundesliga starts, a remarkable goal contribution for the 20-year-old.

The England international is already an elite forward and could complete one of the most formidable frontlines in world football if he makes the switch to Old Trafford.

But United also have to prepare for the possibility of missing out on their primary target this summer.

The Athletic’s report suggests Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele could be viewed as a cheaper transfer alternative to Sancho.

Dembele, 23, has endured an injury-hit season, making just nine appearances.

But if he can recreate some of the form that earned him a move to the Nou Camp from Sancho’s current side Dortmund, then he may prove to be another astute United signing.

We think Solskjaer should hold out for Sancho rather than signing a less effective alternative, regardless of whether it means delaying the deal until next season.
