Manchester United must press ahead with their transfer plans this summer regardless of the financial uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic.

There is reason for cautious optimism at Old Trafford ahead of the Premier League’s return this month with United unbeaten in their last eleven games.

But manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only has to look at the 37 point gap between the Reds and runaway leaders Liverpool in the league table with nine games remaining to realise just how much work still needs to be done.

Solskjaer needs to strengthen in several areas this summer as he looks to close the gap on their bitterest rivals.

And the reputable Miguel Delaney has revealed the transfer targets that are of highest priority to United this summer.

According to his report in the Independent, Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, Swansea City defender Joe Rodon and Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish have all emerged in the band of ‘highest priority targets’ and are the players most likely to move to Old Trafford.

United’s interest in Sancho is well documented and he could provide the perfect solution to the lack of balance on the right-wing. Sancho’s hat-trick against Paderborn on Sunday was the latest reminder of the clinical edge he could offer Solskjaer’s side.

The report suggests United ‘would do anything’ to sign the 20-year-old and its looking increasingly likely he’ll leave Dortmund.

Young Welsh centre-back Joe Rodon made his first international appearance under Ryan Giggs last year and fits the recruitment model of promising, British talent. Perhaps more agile than captain Harry Maguire, Rodon is another imposing force that would bolster United’s defensive options.

However, United already have three talented young centre-backs coming through in Teden Mengi, Di’Shon Bernard and Axe Tuanzebe that all have the potential to become first-team regulars.

Meanwhile, Jack Grealish is a playmaker that United are interested in as they seek more creativity from midfield. But a transfer would appear to rest on Paul Pogba’s future with the Reds not requiring the 24-year-old if their star Frenchman stays.
