Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s four potential Man Utd striker targets for January

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is pressing ahead with plans to sign a striker in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Evening Standard claims that the attack is being prioritised by the United boss, who has been holding monthly meetings with his recruitment team regarding possible targets.

In Anthony Martial, Solskjaer has a frontman he can rely upon, but there are no natural strikers competing for a place with the Frenchman.

His absence through injury early in the campaign became a serious problem as the Reds were left without a focal point.

The need for another striker has been obvious ever since Romelu Lukaku’s summer departure and there are reportedly four potential targets to replace the Belgian international.

Erling Haaland is a player many fans want to see United this summer and the 19-year-old is high in Solskjaer’s thoughts, the Standard’s report claims.

The 19-year-old has scored a sensational 39 goals in all competitions already this season for RB Salzburg, and has played under Solskjaer before during his time at Molde.

Callum Wilson is another potential option for Solskjaer, and the Bournemouth forward could be an attainable target in January. Wilson scored 14 Premier League goals last season and already has five so far for the Cherries in this campaign. While Wilson is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League, he is now 27 and Solskjaer will need to consider whether signing a younger player with higher potential would be more suitable.

RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner and Richarlison are also mentioned as other possible targets. Richarlison is a versatile forward who could work well in Solskjaer’s fluid attacking system, but he would undoubtedly come at a high cost.

Werner, meanwhile, has 11 Bundesliga goals in as many games this season and is highly regarded as one of the most clinical strikers in world football.  Signing the 23-year-old would prove a major coup for Solskjaer, but a move would seem more probable in the summer.
