A deal that could see Anthony Martial join Premier League rivals

Talks have reportedly taken place regarding a possible transfer taking Willian from Chelsea to Manchester United in a swap deal involving Anthony Martial this summer.

Jose Mourinho sees Willian as the perfect upgrade to Martial, according to the Independent‘s chief football writer Miguel Delaney, who believes the United boss is becoming frustrated with the France international’s lack of development.

The Portuguese tactician brought Willian to Stamford Bridge while he was Chelsea manager. The Brazilian recently opened the scoring against United when the Blues lost 2-1 in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

The Daily Mirror have jumped on the same story, but the Independent add that contact has already been made by intermediaries.

Willian would add balance to United’s shape, which already appears heavily reliant on the left side as opposed to right. The Chelsea winger would see United quicker down both flanks, therefore, a much more potent unit going forward.

It’s also clear Martial doesn’t fit Mourinho’s requirements as an attacker. The Frenchman, in my opinion, doesn’t work hard enough, whereas Willian has already gained the United manager’s trust.

Mourinho was even quoted by the Daily Mail in February calling William “top, cream of the crop” before going on to describe him as “amazing”.

This is likely to split United fans, who rate Martial highly and would see him leaving the club as a huge mistake.
