Nemanja Matic delivers his verdict on Chris Smalling’s performance following the Manchester derby.
Smalling has come under server criticism of late with many suggesting Jose Mourinho should sell the former Maidstone United and Fulham defender.
But it was Smalling who scored United’s winning goal versus champions elect Manchester City at the weekend.
Paul Pogba netted twice to force a dramatic comeback but Smalling’s volley granted all three points for The Reds.
Speaking exclusively to MUTV, Matic argued: “I think Chris Smalling was the main star.
“I think this is the best game for our fans because I know what this game means for them, especially when we knew that, if they [City] won this game, they would be champions and we didn’t allow them to celebrate in front of our supporters.
“I think it’s the most important [game] and for our supporters, it was the best way to show the pride and the best way to show how we fight for our club.”
The result put United in a stronger position to finish second. Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Everton only strengthened that but one eye should also be kept on Tottenham Hotspur.
