Cole: United’s aim should be top four again

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole thinks a title challenge next season is probably beyond Louis van Gaal’s men

A trip to Hull City on Sunday, after securing a place in the Champions League play-offs, will not change our position sitting in fourth but fans are already eager to see United challenge Chelsea for the Premier League title this time next year.

Speaking to Press Association Sport, Cole disagreed with van Gaal’s comments about being ‘very close’ to Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

“The aim should be the same again — to finish in the Champions League. To win the Premier League next year would be very, very tough.

“Chelsea have been the best team. In the first half of the season they played very well and in the second half they ground results out.

“How many teams can do what Chelsea do? There are going to be the team to beat next season.

“Arsenal will be there if they buy a couple of players. If you miss out for two years it gets harder and harder. It will be tough for Manchester United to win the Premier League next year.”

Should Manchester United aim higher than top four next season under Louis van Gaal?
