Rooney: I’m just happy to be on the pitch, I’ll play anywhere

Wayne Rooney, this season, has been adapting to a much deeper position than usual due to the not so easy task of filling the creative void left by Paul Scholes’ retirement after the Champions League final.

However, the 26-year-old claims he’s loving his new role in the centre of midfield simply because he is granted a chance the make a bigger influence than he would up front. My honest opinion on the midfield role Rooney is currently being played in, is that he’s the best we’ve got for that particular position. Although, he isn’t a long term solution.

“I love it. I don’t care where I play. I’m just happy to be on the pitch, I’ll play anywhere.

“Well, probably not right-back, no. But midfield is a role where you can get on the ball and influence the game a bit more.”

Despite not training with the squad at Carrington today, Rooney is expected to start the Champions League game against Benfica in the unfamiliar role. Hopefully we will see a goal or two from him.
