Erik ten Hag on trial as new technical director reviews Manchester United managerial situation

Erik ten Hag is on trial as Manchester United’s new technical director, Jason Wilcox, conducts a review of the manager.

The Dutchman has overseen a difficult second campaign in charge, with United crashing out of the Champions League group stages and failing to mount a strong challenge for the top four.

Ten Hag’s position as manager was put into further doubt on Sunday when United’s season threatened to hit new lows when the team threw away a 3-0 lead in their FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City. The Reds eventually booked their place in the final, but it took a penalty shootout after extra time.

Wilcox, who completed his move to United from Southampton last week, will reportedly use the final month of the season to decide whether Ten Hag should remain manager. He will assess his strengths and weaknesses whilst also trying to gauge whether his style can prove successful at Old Trafford – or if the club requires change, reports The Telegraph.

Huge decision for Wilcox to make

This means Wilcox will look at the upcoming training sessions. He’ll also hold talks with Ten Hag, his backroom staff and the players during his review.

Wilcox wants to investigate whether Ten Hag’s relationship with his team has begun to deteriorate.

It’s a huge decision to make and we’ve always backed Ten Hag at Stretty News. That said, many fans leaving Wembley after beating Coventry City felt his substitutions cost us the three-goal lead.

  1. we need to do a post mortem on the whole squad. firstly, the fitness staffs because the players are injured during training. after that, the medical staffs because there are lots of injuries that is unexplainable like tyrell malacia etc. the recovery stage is very slow and when they are ready, they get injured again during training. this is unacceptable. moving on, we go to the players attitude and mentality. players that are paid heavily and costs us lots of money, are not doing their job. players like rashford, anthony etc. yes, rashford do not want to leave man utd, why, because he is very much comfortable earning his high wages, week in week out. lastly, we look at the manager. ten hag is losing the plot. his pressing game is not suitable for man utd. this is not a dutch league, this is epl, where players from the top flight, fight for every ball. our players are not used to this method eventhough when they are representing their countries. ten hag should look deeper in every each individual strength and play a system to fit everyone. yes, we want to play a pressing and fast game but the players are not up to it. by imposing them to ten hag’s method is definitely not their style. ten hag should be using SAF blueprint to be successful. we need to find upgraded players that can provide us with trophies. let me explain. we take players from SAF era and compared it with the current players. for example, we have ryan giggs on the left wing. ten hag should be looking for an upgraded ryan giggs that can run and dribble and taking olayers at his wimp and fancies. just compare giggs and rashford. you do the maths. another example is anthony on the right wing. compare him with becks. there is no way anthony will be playing during SAF era. even valencia is better than anthony and look at how much we bought anthony, ridiculous. the wingers are dribblers and are good crossers of the ball. hojlund did not these services bit he is trying his very best to score. his wotk rate in very commendable. the main point is, ten hag or any other managet that is coming in to our club, should and must follow SAF blueprint, simple as that. players that better than SAF era, in every position and have the will to fight for the batch. if this is ignored, we will never get back to our winning ways. ten hag should have the guts to take off players who are not committed and lazy and not replacing them with 5 to 10 mins remaining. SAF used to substitute players on the 70th mins. please check the stats if i am wrong. i have been supporting man utd all my life and nothing is more important for me than seeing man utd back to our glorious days during SAF era.

  2. Too big a gamble, I feel, to give Ten Hag the offer of a third Season: there’s no sign of progress from the Team ( quite the opposite, in fact) and still no sign of a style of play.
The ‘injuries’ excuse is trotted out ad nauseum but can’t excuse the displays we’ve seen all too often, and the ‘under strength’ side that started against Coventry was good enough comfortably to win in 90 minutes. Player-wise, anyway, if not street-smarts, which is where the coaching comes in.
Now, there are undoubtedly positions in the side that need strengthening, but do INEOS sign off several hundred million over the summer in the hope that ETH is correct with his assertions? Knowing that the new signings might not be what any new Manager wants?
Can’t see it, myself: too big a risk so I think we’ll have a new Manager in the next few weeks.

  3. Every time Ten Hag goes to the bench, it’s like the film Groundhog Day. Brings Anthony on to replace Garnacho, Anthony does nothing, – except for his goal versus Liverpool- and it’s like we’re down to ten men. Yet the manager keeps doing the same thing. Then he compounds his mistake with further mindless replacements. He has to go, and go now. If he doesn’t we may not win another game.

  4. whats funny about the ETH-cult fanboys is that if one asked them what they thought of murtagh and arnold’s decision making they would correctly tell you that they couldn’t pick a winner in a one horse race. yet when it comes to ETH apparently they made the right decision, and this with a very large body (and mounting) of evidence proving otherwise. its very strange.

I doubt wilcox or ratcliffe for that matter think ETH has what it takes – the coventry game has to be the last straw – ETH plays chaos football and then every game seems surprised that united don’t control the games. its just bizarre at this stage.

  5. ETH has to go along with quite a few players. There is no pressing of the ball and players can get the ball on the edge of their box and walk, literally walk right up to our box unchallenged. That is not the Utd I have supported for over 50yrs. Their passing is slow and always backwards. It is like a team that has just been put together that day for the game. They don’t understand how each other plays or where they will be on the pitch, so dysfunctional.
A whole new central defence is needed and get rid of that sour faced miserable Rashford. Talk about a man down. It’s like playing with 10 men.
