Jose Mourinho takes aim at ‘best referee in the world’ after Manchester United draw

Jose Mourinho did not want to speak about the incident that led to him being sent off in his post-match interview.

Instead, the Fenerbahce boss took aim at referee Clement Turpin after the game.

The former Manchester United manager will grab the headlines for his reaction to a penalty appeal, which Turpin ignored before showing Mourinho a red card for leaving his technical and hurling verbal abuse towards the fourth official.

However, it is worth noting that Turpin made the right call. Ugarte’s contact was minimal at best.

Mourinho spoke to TNT Sports after the match when he opened fire on the referee, sarcastically referring to Turpin as the ‘best referee in the world’.

“He told me something incredible,” said the Fenerbahce boss.

“He told me that at the same time he could see the action in the box and my reaction on touchline. He had one eye on the penalty situation and one eye on the bench and my behaviour.

“That’s why he is the best referee in the world!”

Fenerbahce are a side United should be beating and I saw nothing tonight to change my opinion on that. We didn’t build on the opening goal and sloppy defending cost us early on in the second half.

The hosts were underdogs and they’ll get a boost from the result.

As for United, it’s a setback and another sign and we struggle to win consecutive matches.

Paul Scholes enjoys Jose Mourinho interview

“That [Jose Mourinho interview] was better than the game, wasn’t it? It looks like he’s got his mischievous [side] back about him, it was good to see that version of Jose than the one we saw at United a few years ago that wasn’t that great,” Scholes said on TNT Sports, as quoted by BBC Sports.

“He knows it’s not a penalty but the explanation of the referee was brilliant.”
