Manchester United’s record away from home just got worse after a 1-0 defeat against West Ham.
The Reds had a chance to move up to third in the table with a win after Arsenal beat Newcastle in the 4:30pm kick-off, but we failed to show up again, losing 1-0 after a howler from David de Gea.
Without further ado, here are three talking points from the game.
Time for a new goalkeeper
United went into the break behind after gifting West Ham a goal. Benrahma had a pop from distance only for David de Gea to spill it into his own net.
This immediately put United on the back foot and we never responded. It also raises valid questions about our goalkeeper situation, with De Gea set to get a new deal.
De Gea seems to struggle every week whether it’s playing out from the back, crosses or the odd howler. His clean sheet record reads well, but don’t let that fool you. It would be a mistake not to look for a new No.1 this summer.
The Spaniard has been a terrific servant to the club but he’s gone backwards. It’s time to replace.
Attack was non-existent
Everyone knows United need to sign a centre-forward in the summer, but we’re not creating enough chances or putting any of them away. It’s a worry when we need three wins from our final four league matches.
It was clear against Brighton and it was the same old story tonight in London. Shoehorning Bruno Fernandes into any old midfield role so that Wout Weghorst can play as a No.10 is counterproductive, too.
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford struggled to make an impact and you could count the amount of times Antony touched the ball in the second half with one hand.
Anthony Martial had a decent chance when he came on but he isn’t someone you want to turn to on the bench when the team is lacking fight and urgency. They only decided to get going in stoppage time when it was too late.
Doubts over top four
Top four was within reach a few weeks ago, before United started to let things slip.
Liverpool are just one point behind us but we’ve still got one game in-hand on the Scousers.
Our form is in the mud and there’s little to no room for error between now and the end of the season. Panic mode!
