Manchester United wins are more important than individual numbers, stresses Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes has stressed the importance of winning matches with Manchester United over individual goal contributions.

The Portugal international became a Red in January 2020 after signing from Sporting CP. In his first half-season for United, he scored 12 goals, picked up eight assists and was named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year at the end of the 2019/2020 campaign.

The following season, he was likely the best-attacking midfielder in the world for a while; 28 goals and 17 assists in all competitions secured him the prestigious Player of the Year award for the second consecutive time.

Fernandes was the definition of an ‘instant impact’ signing and he has since been irreplaceable in the Red Devils’ starting lineup. Whilst his numbers have lessened, his impact on the pitch is still as instrumental as ever. The 28-year-old is a leader and a dominant figure. His passing, pressing, vision, attacking threat and defensive efforts are second to none.

Fernandes weighs in on goal contributions

United’s No.8 addressed the difference in his goal contributions after Tuesday’s 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest and insisted it was not an issue so long as his side are picking up victories. He told NNC Sports (via the United website): “If we’re talking about statistics, in my first year it was amazing. Probably now, I’m not getting as many goals and assists but I’m playing much better and I am more involved in the game than I was before.

“It’s more important that the team wins. That makes your week. It’s easier to go to training and see the same faces when you win than it is when you lose.”
