Tom Heaton signs new one-year deal as United make squad decision

Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract at Manchester United, keeping the 39-year-old at Old Trafford for another season.

The news was confirmed by reporter Si Stone, with Fabrizio Romano also confirming the extension shortly after. The deal extends Heaton’s stay beyond his previous contract and reflects a deliberate squad management call by INEOS rather than any change in his standing within the goalkeeper hierarchy.

Heaton’s role at Manchester United

It goes without saying that Heaton is not competing for the No.1 shirt. With André Onana firmly established as first choice, the 39-year-old’s value lies elsewhere – in the dressing room, on the training pitch, and on the squad registration sheet. Director of football Jason Wilcox has been direct about that, describing Heaton’s mentality and preparation as “the perfect complement to our goalkeeping group” and noting that his presence “sets an excellent standard for our goalkeeping unit.”

The homegrown angle is also worth noting. Heaton is a Manchester United academy product, having originally left the club in 2010, and his status as a homegrown player carries genuine structural value when it comes to Premier League and UEFA squad registrations. INEOS will be well aware that homegrown slots are not always easy to fill with players of senior experience.

Since rejoining on a free transfer in 2021, Heaton has made just three competitive appearances for the Reds – a Champions League outing against Young Boys in December 2021, and two League Cup appearances in 2022–23 in which he kept clean sheets against Charlton Athletic and Nottingham Forest as United lifted the Carabao Cup.

United’s goalkeeper situation ahead of 2026/27

The wider picture in United’s goalkeeping department is still taking shape. Altay Bayındır is expected to leave, with a move to Beşiktaş understood to be progressing, and Romano has since added further detail on that situation. Should Bayındır depart, Heaton’s renewal becomes more structurally significant – the Reds would otherwise be light on experienced cover behind Onana heading into a Champions League campaign.

Heaton’s new deal runs only to the summer of 2027, at which point the club will revisit the arrangement. Whether INEOS look to bring in a younger third-choice option alongside him this window, or lean on the academy to fill the depth role, remains to be seen.
