PSV name asking price for Manchester United target Cody Gakpo

PSV have reportedly confirmed their asking price for sought-after forward Cody Gakpo, who was close to joining Manchester United in the summer.

The 23-year-old is in prolific form for his club this season; he has netted 13 goals and assisted 14 in 21 games across all competitions for PSV so far.

Statistically, Gakpo is the most in-form forward across Europe right now. He is set to be called up by Louis van Gaal to represent Netherlands in the World Cup this November.

United had set their sights on Gakpo last summer, but a deal failed to materialise due to the Red Devils prioritising the signing of £86 million winger Antony. The Dutchman has since admitted it “was a shame” the transfer did not go through.

However, Erik ten Hag may be keen to bolster his squad with the addition of the forward in January, and his price tag is affordable for the club.

According to the Telegraaf, PSV must accept bids of €30 million for their player in order to ease the financial strain on the Eredivisie side.

United short on forward options – Gakpo ideal

Currently, United’s first-choice striker options are Anthony Martial, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford, with the latter rotating between the number nine and winger roles. Martial has struggled to maintain fitness this season and has accumulated just 133 minutes of playing time.

Ronaldo has undoubtedly been one of the best goal-scorers in the world over the past years, but he is now 37 years old and is not Ten Hag’s preferred option to lead the line.

Gakpo is a young, eager and talented option who is able to start games from the get-go, given his experience and goal contributions.
