Marcus Rashford reacts to missing England camp with injury

Marcus Rashford is returning to his brilliant best after scoring three goals and assisting another two in his first six Premier League appearances under Erik ten Hag.

The 24-year-old looks reborn under the Dutchman and he will be targetting a seat on the plane to Qatar in November after missing all camps in 2022.

Ahead of Thursday’s squad announcement, there were murmurs that Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were set to be recalled to the England fold after showing good form for United.

As it turned out, both players would miss out. Sancho has not been picked and he’s not believed to be carrying any injury – he is likely to play against Sheriff Tiraspol tonight.

Rashford could have featured in the squad but the winger picked up an injury in the 3-1 win over Arsenal, ruling him out of United’s games against Real Sociedad and Sheriff.

Breaking his silence shortly after Southgate revealed his squad for games against Italy and Germany, Rashford wrote on Twitter to assure fans that his exclusion was down to an injury.

“Good luck to the boys later today @ManUtd,” Rashford wrote, as seen above.

“In regards to England, every player wants to represent (their) country and I’m no different! Unfortunately I’m not ready yet as I’ve picked up an untimely injury.”

SN’s verdict…
Rashford would most likely have made the squad if he was fit and it would be deserved. He remains England’s best winger and considering some of the other selections made – Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Jarrod Bowen, in particular – he will fancy his chances of making the final squad for Qatar.

Ten Hag will, however, be glad to hear that Rashford will be given additional rest to recover from his injury as United’s fixture list gets even more difficult to handle in this unprecedented season.
