Liverpool agree terms with Darwin Nunez as United look set to miss out on another goalscorer

Negotiations are underway between Liverpool and Benfica over the signing of Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old Uruguayan goalscorer has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, but we could always see Liverpool providing competition, especially with Sadio Mane eager to leave for German giants Bayern Munich.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool have reached an agreement on personal terms with Nunez. After starting talks with the Portuguese club on Wednesday it’s understood that Liverpool have moved a step closer to completing the transfer.

Sources add that nothing has been signed with the player and nothing has been agreed between the clubs, with Benfica asking for around €100m (£85.5m) in total for Nunez’s signature.

United will be short on attacking options next season unless they sign a forward this summer. We can’t go another season being over-reliant on a 37-year-old and I’d like to see Cristiano Ronaldo’s games managed better.

Nunez scored 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica in 2021-22 and he prefers to play on the left, but can manage just fine in a central role which would give Erik ten Hag some much needed depth in attack.

Moreover, after missing out on Erling Haaland to Man City, it’s not a good look if another one of our rivals beats us to the signing of Nunez.

Soon we might be asking who the next best thing in the market is when it comes to young goalscorers. I hope the recruitment team don’t just settle for someone like Jonathan David.

United’s priorities appear to be elsewhere.
