(Video) Danny Murphy says United should have hired Southgate over Ten Hag

Where do we start with this one?

We’ve got an outlandish claim about Manchester United from a former Liverpool player to dissect.

Danny Murphy has told talkSPORT that he would have hired Gareth Southgate for the United job because the club needs someone to come in and create unity like the current England squad.

United’s decision to hire Erik ten Hag, 52, has been welcomed by the fans – but it doesn’t sit right with Murphy…

When asked who he would have picked for the United job — Southgate or Ten Hag — the former England international said: “Gareth and Steve [Holland].”

He went on to add: “Well I know them. They’ve come a long way, the pair of them, they’ve got a great partnership.

“I think for what they’ve achieved at England, the way he’s managed players, big players, I think he’s evolved into a very, very intelligent football manager. With Steve by his side I think they’d do a great job at a big club.”

Just to put it out there, I wouldn’t want to be that big club taking a risk on Southgate. International football is very different to managing at the top of the European game.

Moreover, I am cautiously optimistic about Ten Hag coming in.

Didn’t talkSPORT have an end of season special with Mark Goldbridge – to discuss all matters on United – in a blatant bid to cause a stir on their radio network?

This is the sort of content they feed their listeners.
