Man United close in on Erik Ten Hag’s first big-name signing

Manchester United need a new striker this summer.

It is no secret – the Red Devils are desperately short of outright goalscorers.

The 20-time league winners were forced to rely on 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo for large parts of the 2021-22 season and will definitely need to bring in another forward to help ease the pressure on the Portuguese superstar.

Speaking about the club’s need for a ‘younger’ striker earlier in the year, former interim boss Ralf Rangnick, as quoted by ESPN, said: “This is obvious. Edison’s contract is running out in the summer, and the club needs the best possible centre forward. This is an obvious one. I think everyone is aware of that.”

Ahead of what looks set to be one of the most important summer transfer windows in the club’s rich history, although the Red Devils are expected to make multiple signings, one player who appears the closest to securing a move to Old Trafford is Benfica’s, Darwin Nunez.

Relentlessly linked with a move to the Premier League, according to a recent report from journalist Dean Jones, it is Erik Ten Hag’s United that are frontrunners to land the prolific South American.

“One source described this deal to United to me as being ‘extremely close’,” Jones told GiveMeSport.

“They consider Atletico Madrid as their main rivals to sign him, from what I hear, but obviously, loads around Europe are looking. If Darwin does move to Old Trafford, it will be a brilliant signing for the Ten Hag era.”

Since joining Benfica in 2020, the 22-year-old, who has three years left on his deal, has gone on to feature in 84 matches, in all competitions, directly contributing to 63 goals along the way.
