Steve McClaren considered for No 2 role at United if Erik ten Hag becomes manager

A familiar face could return to Old Trafford if Erik ten Hag is appointed Manchester United manager.

According to The Guardian, Steve McClaren is under consideration as Ten Hag’s potential No 2, as the club look to find someone with Premier League experience to work alongside the Dutchman.

Ten Hag held initial talks with United last month, with a second meeting set to take place this week in London, as revealed by Stretty News on Monday.

Talks are ‘going well’ and United are expected to reach a conclusion soon.

McClaren was assistant manager at United between 1999 and 2001 under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning the treble in his first season, and that is the level we want to get back to.

Should the appointments happen, it would see the roles reversed for the pair because Ten Hag was McClaren’s assistant for a year at FC Twente.

The current Ajax boss is seen as one of the top up and coming managers in Europe and it would say a lot if McClaren wants to work with him at United.
