Premier League decides against break after COVID-19 meeting

The Premier League will continue despite ongoing disruption caused by COVID-19 cases.

Today, as reported by BBC Sport, all 20 top-flight clubs held discussions on how they could deal with the challenges faced after six games were postponed over the weekend, including Manchester United vs Brighton.

That was, of course, United’s second match to be postponed last week – after a Tuesday night trip to Brentford was called off less than 24 hours before the scheduled kick-off time.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank called for the Premier League to take a break over Christmas, as per Sky Sports, but that won’t be happening anytime soon with clubs being advised if they have 13 fit players, plus a goalkeeper, they should fulfil their games.

It’s a pretty hardline stance but one we actually think is right.

United have a number of talented players in the youth team — as do other Premier League clubs — that they should call upon if the numbers are low.

Moreover, there has been talks between clubs and authorities to scrap FA Cup replays in rounds three and four, and to reduce EFL Cup semi-finals ties to one-leg matches.

With six games postponed over the weekend, several clubs are already playing catch up, including United having played 2 games less than most teams.

Let’s hope the amount of cases in the Premier League (as well as the UK and beyond) drop in the coming weeks, after last week’s round of testing returned with 42 positives, the highest number since the start of the pandemic.

United’s next game is a trip to Newcastle on December 27.
