Jose Mourinho has taken another cheap swipe at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, insisting that the Portuguese man is treated differently to United’s boss in the media. The 58-year-old, who is set to take charge of Roma this summer, couldn’t resist laying into Manchester United’s trophyless season when quizzed on his former club.

Manchester United’s season ended in disappointment last season as they crashed out of the Europa League final on penalty kicks but will take positives into the next campaign, a privilege lost on Mourinho’s time at the club according to the man himself.

“This season, people were saying: ‘Great season, you finished second’,” Mourinho told The Sun. “I’d say, ‘we finished second, it’s a bad season’.

“I like Manchester United, the fans were amazing with me. And I think it is good for them that another season without trophies is seen as positive. But with me the level of expectation coming from the media is completely different.”

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager has a history of firing shots at his successors, having previously done so with Rafa Benitez at Inter. Following United’s 3-1 win over Tottenham in April, Mourinho launched a staggering attack on Solskjær.

Mourinho is still the last Manchester United manager to lift a trophy at the club, having won two of them in his first season – a record he will be sure to keep in his mind and ready to throw at doubters in time for the next personal crisis.
