Alex Telles has set his sights on an improved second season after acting as Luke Shaw’s back-up for large parts of his first campaign in England. The left-back was brought in on deadline day last year as Solskjær added depth to his squad.
Restricted to just 9 league games in 2020/21 due to Luke Shaw’s resurgence story, Telles was often a returning figure on United’s bench but ended the season on a strong note, starting two of United’s last three league fixtures and performing well.
“I believe I’ve made the most of this season,” Telles told ManUtd.com. “I’ve learnt a great deal, I learnt a lot of things, I’ve developed as a player and a person as well.
“I’m really happy with my first season at United and I’m sure that next season will be even better. I think I always took the opportunity to do my best whenever I was on the pitch. I had good games, with the adaptation process the first season isn’t easy, but I believe that when Ole gave me the opportunity and placed his trust in me and put me on the pitch, I did my best.”
Although league appearances were limited for Telles, he featured 11 times in the Champions League and Europa League.
He will be expected to continue knocking on Luke Shaw’s door and will add real competition – the Brazil international will not sit around and be happy with playing second fiddle.
Despite his few appearances, Telles still found a way to contribute at both ends of the pitch. The 28-year-old provided the assist for four goals throughout the campaign.
