Roma to disappoint Jose Mourinho by dropping pursuit of Manchester United midfielder

AS Roma won’t be signing Nemanja Matic this summer, according to reports.

Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb claims the Serbian midfielder’s salary demands are too high and that completely rules out the possibility of a switch to Roma.

The former Benfica and Chelsea star was a reported target for new manager Jose Mourinho, leading previous reports to suggest a reunion was on the cards.

Matic has already fallen down the pecking order and with many fans hoping to see a quality midfield addition this summer, it’s time for the Serb to move on.

The midfielder previous enjoyed two spells under Mourinho — at Chelsea before United — and at Old Trafford, he was a trusted figure in the Portuguese coach’s side.

The report claims that Matic earns £6m-per-year (€7m) – a figure Roma can’t meet.

In an ideal world, United would invest in a defensive midfielder this summer – along with a centre-back and right winger. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a full-back to offer both competition and back-up for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

But a defensive midfielder should be high on the priority list.
