Apart from having a bursting trophy cabinet, is there anything Sir Alex Ferguson is better known for than his legendary ‘hairdryer’ treatment?
The world-class former manager unleashed a barrage of verbal attacks (sometimes physical if you’re David Beckham) throughout his never-to-be-matched managerial career.
Often seen emerging from the tunnel at half-time red faced with his players carrying their tail between their legs, it wasn’t hard to imagine what the side’s dressing room had endured.
However, after retiring in 2013 and now enjoying ‘the beautiful game’ from the comfort of the Red Devils’ executive suites, Ferguson has admitted he probably couldn’t get away with unleashing his trademark ‘hairdryer’ in modern football.
Speaking to The Athletic (as quoted by The Sun), Ferguson said: “Jim Smith told me one of his players started crying when he got criticised.
“I thought ‘What is the game like now? Where are we going?’
“Obviously you have to be tactful nowadays about the criticism you give them.”
