Man Utd defender makes first start for club in three years after shock Solskjaer selection

Not many would have predicted this…

Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s shock inclusion is the headline news in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team selection ahead of this evening’s game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Fosu-Mensah comes in at left-back in place of Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams, who have failed to recover from injuries picked up in Monday’s 2-2 draw at home to Southampton.

As noted by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Fosu-Mensah hasn’t started a United game since May 2017 and makes his first ever appearance at left-back this evening.

The Dutchman has endured difficult loan spells at both Fulham and Crystal Palace in the last two seasons, and perhaps has been selected due to his knowledge of the likes of Wilfried Zaha from playing at Selhurst Park.

Even so, his involvement is particularly surprising given many supporters expected to see Diogo Dalot slot in at left-back if Shaw and Williams couldn’t make full recoveries.

Dalot starts on the bench this evening which is a definite sign that he is not fully trusted by Solskjaer and prompts questions over the Portugal youth international’s future at Old Trafford.
