Ryan Giggs tells Solskjaer how many players he must sign to complete Man United rebuild

Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United need ‘four or five’ signings to be considered serious title challenges.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a 100% transfer success rate so far as manager with Daniel James, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo all impressing in their fledgling United careers.

There is reason for cautious optimism at Old Trafford with the Reds unbeaten in 11 games before the coronavirus suspension and signs Solskjaer is starting to create his own identity.

But there is also an understanding just how far United are from challenging for the Premier League and the work that still needs to be done to close the gap on the bitterest rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

Despite United’s upturn in form, they are a staggering 37 points behind Jurgen Klopp’s runaway leaders and are on course for their worst league finish for 30 years.

United great Giggs, who won 13 titles during his trophy-laden 24-year spell at the club, has been impressed with Solskjaer for his work so far.

“It was a shame we had to pause the season because we were flying,” Giggs told the club’s official website.

“Ole started his management with United flying, then had a tough spell, and then we were on a good run. But, like I said earlier, the players he’s got in have been really impressive…

“I still think we need four or five players but we’re definitely going in the right direction.”

The uncertainty around the transfer market means United’s progress could be halted by a lack of business this summer.

But the enviable financial position United find themselves in due to their commercial power means the club potentially has a great opportunity to capitalise.

Manchester Evening News report that Solskjaer is pressing ahead with his summer plans and still sees priority targets Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham and Jack Grealish as attainable options.

Meanwhile, two of Giggs’ most exciting Wales prospects have also been linked with surprise moves to Old Trafford.

Shalke winger Rabbi Matondo is reportedly being lined up as an alternative to Jadon Sancho while Swansea centre-back Joe Rodon is also said to have his admirers at United.
