Frank Lampard lauds new Man United signing ahead of crucial clash

Frank Lampard has described Manchester United’s new signing Bruno Fernandes as a ‘top player’ ahead of Monday’s game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reds travel to Stamford Bridge sitting in ninth position in the league, but can move within three points of their opponents in the Champions League places with victory.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are without a win in three league games and would have welcomed the mid-season winter break.

Fernandes will make his second United appearance at Stamford Bridge, after his impressive debut against Wolves.

The Portugal midfielder was arguably United’s best player at Old Trafford, but could not provide the decisive moment in the dull draw.

Lampard is wary of the talent that Fernandes possesses and praised United for getting the deal for the 25-year-old over the line.

“I think they are strong anyway and will be stronger because they’ve done good business,” Lampard told Sky Sports, as quoted by Manchester Evening News.

“I think Fernandes is a top player, he scores goals, I know all about his record and that.

“We have to take that into account and he will be wanting to make his mark on the Premier League in general. I think they are a top team.

“Again they are gunning for the top four the size of club they are. We won’t be under any illusions, it’s going to be a tough game but we have to trust in ourselves, be confident at home, play well and try and win the game.”

Fernandes could prove to be the difference on Monday evening but has to be played in the right position by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The United boss should operate him in the number 10 position where he can can become more influential in attack, rather than alongside Fred in a double pivot.
