False hope? Nothing in Ronaldo speculation

Cristiano Ronaldo will not be rejoining Manchester United next season, according to Sir Alex Ferguson. The Old Trafford boss does not believe there’s anything to take from speculation linking him with a return.

Having spent six years in Manchester, winning three league titles, the FA Cup and the European Cup, Ronaldo has fond memories of his time at the club. Individually he picked up the Ballon d’Or and World Player of the Year; two awards he has failed to win since joining Real Madrid in 2009.

For the best part of a year there has been talk of Ronaldo being unhappy at Madrid. These stories stemmed from his reluctance to sign a new contract whilst hitting out at suggestions that it was about earning more money than they had already offered. “I am accused of wanting more money, but one day it will be shown that this is not the case,” Ronaldo said.

When asked about the situation earlier, Ferguson described it as false hope. He told reporters: “I don’t think there’s anything, as far as I’m aware, that would encourage me to think he would come back here. I don’t think there’s anything in that at all. He has got two years left on his contract. It could be to do with the fact that negotiations are going on for a new contract. I think maybe his agent is playing the game, though I’m not prepared to comment on that.”

Even if he wanted a return, would the Glazers supply Ferguson with the funds to bring him back? I’d have him back in a flash but it doesn’t seem very likely unless we sold Wayne Rooney.
