Popular Manchester United coach faces uncertain future

It turns out Erik ten Hag isn’t the only coach at Manchester United that faces an uncertain future.

A new report from ESPN claims the former South Africa striker’s contract is set to expire in the summer and he has not yet been approached by the club about signing a new deal.

It means that McCarthy, who played for FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers during his playing career, could be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer.

To be perfectly honest, however, I think it is just a case of Ineos not yet giving Ten Hag a decision. Why would they give the manager’s coaching staff new deals when the manager himself is still trying to convince Ineos that he is the right man for the job. Ten Hag is under contract until 2025.

McCarthy joined United as part of Ten Hag’s coaching team in July 2022.

This time last year, many were crediting McCarthy for Rashford’s incredible form. The England international scored 30 goals for the club last term, although he has failed to replicate that form this year.

The former South Africa international has been a key part of Ten Hag’s staff, along with assistants Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren.

Rob Dawson reports: “According to sources, Ratcliffe and his INEOS team, led by Sir Dave Brailsford, are not convinced by Ten Hag, but a decision will be delegated to the new football leadership team, planned to be headed by incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.”

This news is likely to worry some of the first-team squad since McCarthy has been seen as a popular figure ver since his arrival at the club.
