The Conservative Party used a famous image of Harry Maguire from the 2018 World Cup to promote Rishi Sunak, but the Manchester United and England centre-back has insisted he did not permit them to do so.
A lot of companies use imagery of footballers without permission as we’ve seen with Maguire in the past. You don’t even need to be a United fan who keeps up to date with daily news to know that the former Leicester City man has been the subject of heavy criticism for quite some time.
However, Maguire’s form has improved this season and fewer critics are complaining about his involvement in the latest England squad, even though Maguire has missed some action lately due to an injury.
The Tories thought it would be a good idea to use a photo of Maguire leaning over a barrier to talk to his then-girlfriend – now wife – Fern Hawkins with the caption: “Rishi said any League with me in it would be Super anyways.”
The post appeared on X after the Government brought the Football Governance Bill to Parliament with details how an independent regulator would stop any future European Super League.

It is positive that they’re trying to prevent a Super League – but I fear more attempts to form a breakaway league will emerge in the coming years.
When asked about the Tories’ post, Maguire said: “No, they have had no permission. I didn’t even know about the advert to be honest.
The defender was also asked whether he could do a better job running the country than Sunak. Maguire said: “No comment!”
Maguire is currently away on international duty with Gareth Southgate’s England side. He is joined by Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo in the latest squad.
