England stars want Gareth Southgate in charge for 2026 World Cup, says Maguire

Harry Maguire claims the whole England squad want Gareth Southgate to stay on and lead them into the 2026 World Cup.

The Manchester United centre-back and his international team-mates are desperate to win the Euros this summer – to convince Southgate to stay on as manager.

Southgate’s contract as England manager expires in December, although the former Middlesbrough man has been linked with a move to Manchester United even though Erik ten Hag remains in the hot seat.

However, Maguire says the whole England squad are desperate for Southgate to stay on and lead them into the 2026 World Cup. The defender also accepts they have to deliver a trophy this summer after coming so close to doing so in the past.

When asked whether the players want Southgate to stay on, Maguire said (via The Mirror): “Yeah, definitely, obviously.

“We want to be successful in the Euros – we are not looking at the World Cup at the moment – but obviously if we are successful at the Euros, which is our main focus, of course, we want to be successful.”

Meanwhile, Southgate has been tipped to succeed Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager.

Harry Maguire will have a seat on flight to Germany

England will travel to Germany as favourites this summer and Maguire is expected to be one of the first names to be listed in Southgate’s squad.

It was suggested that Maguire would not get sufficient game time at United this season and by staying at Old Trafford he ran the risk of missing out on a place in England squad.

However, Maguire has made 24 appearances for the Reds across all competitions and it looks like he will have a starting role under Southgate this summer.

The former Leicester City defender could look to leave United in the coming months, but I don’t think he will regret his decision to stay at the club last year.
