‘Shouldn’t be at Man United anymore’: Club legend says senior player has outstayed his welcome at Old Trafford

Dwight Yorke believes it’s time for Manchester United and Anthony Martial to part ways.

The treble-winner weighed in on Martial’s stagnant career as he enters the final five months of his United contract.

It comes amid a period of increased speculation over the Frenchman’s future, with the latest reports suggesting that he has turned down interest from the likes of Fenerbache, Marseille and Saudi Pro League clubs in favour of staying at Old Trafford until the summer. Then, he will likely leave as a free agent and pull the curtains on his almost nine-year stay in M16.

United do hold the option of triggering a one-year extension, however, they are currently opting against the premise of keeping Martial beyond this season, in which he has featured just 19 times thus far and returned two goals.

Yorke on Martial

Former Red Yorke shared his opinion on the matter and it’s certainly one that is shared by plenty of supporters.

“Martial has been at the club since 2015 and, though he looked promising at the start, he hasn’t offered too much,” he began, as cited by DAZN. “Martial is 28 years old, and you don’t let players that age go out on loan! That’s supposed to be the peak of your career, and no elite team would loan their best players. The moment that happens, the moment your career is in trouble.

“Martial’s wage bill is another valid point, but him going out on loan at 28 means he’s not good enough! There’s always a way to get rid of players like that. I understand the wage debate, but there are ways around that. Martial shouldn’t be at Man United anymore.”
