Manchester City star suspended for Old Trafford derby next week

Erik ten Hag is facing a huge week in charge of Manchester United as he prepares his side for the visits of Copenhagen and Manchester City.

First up, the Dutchman will be aiming to secure his first three points in the Champions League as United are in desperate need of making some headway in their bid to qualify for the knockout phase.

United need to win both games against Copenhagen before the return leg against Bayern Munich in the fifth round, with pressure already mounting on Ten Hag.

Next weekend sets the scene for the first Manchester derby of the weekend and United could mark that occasion with a third consecutive league win.

This weekend’s action saw both sides win but Pep Guardiola’s men have been dealt a blow going into the game, with centre-back Manuel Akanji set to miss out.

Akanji has appeared in seven of City’s nine Premier League games this season and his absence will come as a boost for Ten Hag’s men, who could be without several of their own centre-back regulars.

Lisandro Martinez has already been ruled out for the foreseeable future with a serious foot injury and there are concerns over Raphael Varane’s fitness levels.

The Frenchman missed the 2-1 win over Brentford before the international break and he was only fit enough for a brief appearance in last night’s 2-1 win at Sheffield United.

It remains to be seen whether Ten Hag decides to stick with Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans at centre-back or if Varane is rushed back.
