Manchester United are scrambling to keep hold of 15-year-old academy forward JJ Gabriel after he informed the club he wants to leave, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally aware of the situation as Real Madrid circle.
Gabriel has handed in a letter of de-registration, but United have no intention of granting the request and are hopeful a resolution can still be found. The Reds’ talented forward has been in electric form for the club’s youth sides, as detailed in United’s recent Under-21 victory, and Real Madrid are among several European heavyweights now working on a move.

The story was broken by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, Guillermo Rai, Mario Cortegana and Adam Crafton, published on September 15. Their reporting is the basis for the retention effort, the passport issue and the rival club interest now swirling around Old Trafford.
Why the timing matters
Gabriel joined United at just nine years old and his current deal runs until next summer, but he is not yet a scholar or part of the club’s full-time model because he is homeschooled. That matters because United cannot offer him professional terms before he turns 17, and scholarship terms can only be agreed once he turns 16 – which arrives on October 6.
The Athletic report that a European passport could allow him to move to a foreign club at 16 rather than 18, and Gabriel holds an Irish passport through his father, Joe O’Cearuill, who won two caps for the Republic of Ireland. His mother also has Cypriot heritage. Gabriel has already been training with the seniors, a progression covered when United’s first-team group returned to Carrington for pre-season work.
According to The Athletic: “The matter has come to a head after Gabriel informed United he wants to leave and handed in a letter of de-registration. United have no intention of granting that request and are hopeful a resolution can be found. The Premier League club acknowledge he is an exceptional talent and are trying to keep him. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is aware of the matter, and United executives are making efforts to persuade Gabriel to stay.”

Europe circling, but nothing agreed
Real Madrid are not alone in the chase. Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also trying to recruit Gabriel, per The Athletic, with Madrid having scouted him closely and admired his hat-trick in United’s 5-0 Youth League win over Sabah.
The Spanish giants reportedly feel well-positioned should he move on, and both player and family are said to view La Liga as the dream destination – though that remains reported preference rather than confirmed intent, and no fee or agreement has been reported.
United are still investigating whether they would be powerless to prevent an exit once Gabriel turns 16 on October 6 if his European passport applies. He had been pencilled in for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton, an opportunity now scrapped amid the standoff – leaving Gabriel’s immediate future firmly unresolved.
