Manchester United intend to reject any offer for Bruno Fernandes before next month’s transfer deadline, with Galatasaray reportedly considering a deal that would reach a final fee of 50m euros (£42.7m) for their captain.
The report comes from BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone, who reports that senior sources at Old Trafford have indicated that a Galatasaray approach would be futile. Club sources say Fernandes, 31, is not for sale at any price.
Stone reports that there have been no bids for Fernandes so far. Galatasaray, Juventus and AC Milan were considering whether to test United’s resolve, while the Istanbul club were thought to have been intending to put a deal to United rather than having formally submitted one.
Where things stand on his contract
Fernandes has one year left on his current deal, with an option for an additional season, and it is known that he would prefer to stay. His £57m release clause has expired, and there has so far been no agreement over an extension.
Last summer, United told Fernandes that the decision over a major offer from Saudi Pro-League side Al-Hilal was his to make. Fernandes later said he felt hurt by the club’s stance. This time, United have made their position clear.
The enthusiastic reception Fernandes received in Dublin for last week’s pre-season game with Leeds would have left the club in no doubt that supporters would react badly if it was not clear they were doing everything possible to keep him. He recorded a Premier League record 21 assists last season and is favourite to be named PFA Player of the Year next week.
Juventus and Milan also considering a move
Galatasaray are not the only club considering a move. Juventus and AC Milan were also assessing whether United’s captain could be prised away, though none of the three had made a bid, according to Stone’s reporting.
United have made clear that Fernandes is not for sale as the transfer window continues.
