Cardiff City have joined the race to sign Manchester United striker Ethan Wheatley on loan, with the 20-year-old’s camp expected to make a decision on his immediate future next week, according to Football Lowdown.
The Bluebirds are competing with Aberdeen, Dutch side SC Cambuur, and at least one other unnamed Championship club for Wheatley’s signature. No final call is expected until the player returns from current Manchester United duty.

Another Loan, Bigger Stage
Wheatley already has three loan spells on his CV – Walsall, Northampton Town, and Bradford City – after becoming United’s 250th academy graduate on his Premier League debut against Sheffield United in April 2024. He remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2028 and is highly regarded at Carrington, with United preferring a loan to any permanent exit at this stage.
His most productive spell came at Northampton during the first half of last season: three goals in 22 League One appearances before being recalled in January. The subsequent move to Bradford proved a difficult one – 12 appearances, no goals, and notably absent from both League One play-off semi-final legs against Bolton Wanderers.
Cardiff can offer Championship football, a step up from the League One environments where Wheatley has spent the bulk of his loan career so far. Aberdeen presents regular minutes in the Scottish Premiership; Cambuur would take him abroad to the Eredivisie. The player’s preference, once he returns from United’s pre-season schedule, will likely be the decisive factor.

The Bradford experience underlined that finding the right environment matters as much as the level. At 6ft 2in and with England youth caps from under-17 through to under-20, the raw profile is there – it is consistency and a genuine run of starts that his development now requires.
