Bruno Fernandes has told Manchester United chiefs that he wants ‘assurances over the club’s ambitions’ to stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer.

That’s according to the reputable James Ducker of The Telegraph, who adds that the Red Devils skipper has made clear his hopes of winning both the Premier League and Champions League.

Bruno Fernandes: The state of play

Fernandes will turn 32 shortly after 2026/2027 gets underway, so you can understand him wanting peace of mind that major trophies are on the horizon – and in the not-so-distant future.

Ducker states that the Portuguese may bide his time and see how United’s transfer window develops, with INEOS maintaining that the squad will undergo a much-needed overhaul, particularly in the middle of the park.

Over £200 million was shelled out on the frontline last year via the additions of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, all of whom have proven to be successful signings, having returned a combined 27 Premier League goals.

Mbeumo 9 3
Cunha 8 4
Sesko 10 1

Depth will be essential ahead of United’s UCL return

With United sitting third-placed heading into matchweek 35 and needing just two points from their remaining four fixtures to secure Champions League qualification, it does look as good as certain that they will be back playing amongst Europe’s elite next term.

However, INEOS would have undoubtedly taken note of the firepower on display during last night’s emphatic nine-goal affair between heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, and will know that United’s squad has to be strong enough to come toe-to-toe with opponents like them if they are to fulfil one of Fernandes’ wishes.

The former Sporting Lisbon talisman, who’s only two assists away from setting a new Premier League record, is tied to M16 until June 2027. His contract contains a 12-month option, though it also includes a release clause of only £56.3m, which is sure to tempt a host of top sides in the coming months.
