Jamie Carragher predicts Man United future under Amorim following ‘expected’ collapse

Despite his miserable start to life at Carrington, Jamie Carragher believes Ruben Amorim will guide Manchester United outside of the dark tunnel, but perhaps not overnight.

The Portuguese arrived at Old Trafford last month as a replacement for Erik ten Hag, but the club’s results have hardly improved. If anything, the Red Devils continue to sink further down the table, starting the weekend 14th in the Premier League standings.

The 39-year-old tactician lost five of 10 first outings since taking charge of the club, making it the worst managerial start at Man United since 1932.

Nevertheless, Carragher still feels that Amorim is the right man for the job, as he expects the club to be in a much better place by this time next year, but insists he must rid himself of the squad’s underwhelming big earners.

“Ruben Amorim has a bigger job [than Pep Guardiola] with a blank canvas. He will need more time and patience, especially in getting underperforming players on big contracts out of the club,” said the Liverpool legend in his interview with the Telegraph.

“What is happening at United right now is to be expected – a few good results mixed with reminders as to why they needed a new coach. They will be a better, more consistent team by December 2025, especially when Amorim has a full pre-season and new players to implement his ideas.”

On a personal level, Carragher promised more arguments and bickering with fellow Overlap cast member Gary Neville in 2025.

“Gary’s had another memorable year because I will not be allowing him to forget that he tipped Manchester United to finish above Liverpool this season and, after the first few games, said Slot’s side are nowhere near Arsenal and City’s level.

“So my big hope for 2025 is similar to that during the last 10 years of punditry. I hope to see Gary keep getting his predictions about Liverpool and Manchester United spectacularly wrong!”

  1. It is well and good that Ruben Amorim wants to implement his preferred 3-4-3 system from the outset to give tine familiarity to the players to get adopted. BUT he must have the players to play in that format.
As they say you can’t teach and old dog 🐕 new tricks, he should all he can to go for wins or at least draws to catch up the points lost.
If he had 5 draws instead of 5 defeats, the team will have 5 more points which will be at least more respectable, instead of being marooned in 14th place for almost the whole of December, the only shining light being the victory against Manchester City, who will have no problem overcoming their current malaise as they will buy themselves out of trouble.

  2. Jamie Carragher’s prediction is that Amorim’s future will be successful when he is given time and allowed to get the type of players he want in oder to implement his ideas, notion that has no proof at all. Sincerely, Amorim should accept the reality and use the available players including Rasford, adapt the usual formations; 4:4:2, 4::3:3, 4:2:3:1 etc. to at least win some games and then protect the club from relegation. When he insist on his 3:4:3 formation, sincerely our mighty UTD will be relegated! Then if UTD is relegated, getting back to the premier league will not be easy at all. We have heard him saying and supporting the idea of the club getting relegated, really??? These same players were the ones that won the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and they never sung the club to this low level. That means Amorim’s tactics are not yielding any fruits at all so change is needed to elevate the club from where it is now.
