Ruud van Nistelrooy is preparing for his remaining two matches as Manchester United’s interim manager, after which Ruben Amorim will take the reins and begin his tenure.
A new face in the dugout has been a long time coming at Old Trafford, and while some fans would’ve perhaps liked to see how Van Nistelrooy would’ve fared long-term, there are hopes that Amorim can deliver in the place Erik ten Hag failed to impact the most: the Premier League table.
Unless you’re an optimist, there is seemingly an acceptance among supporters that a top-four spot is slipping further out of United’s reach with each passing match. The side are six points away, which is relatively achievable to close down, but it’s more so that the clubs vying for the Champions League places are unlikely to undergo too many slip-ups throughout the term.
Liverpool, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, and Chelsea currently occupy the spots, while Arsenal, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Brighton and Hove Albion are all fierce contenders to displace those above them.
Meanwhile, United remain in the bottom half of the table in 13th place, sandwiched between Fulham and West Ham.
Amorim tasked with ‘massive’ United job
When reacting to last night’s affairs – the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Chelsea – on The Rest Is Football, Micah Richards highlighted one glaring issue that Amorim will undoubtedly look to solve when he takes over in the mid-month international break.
“There’s just a massive disconnect between Manchester United’s midfield and Rasmus Hojlund up front,” Richards declared. Ruben Amorim has a massive job on his hands.
“I thought United were there for the taking, so that would be my only worry for Chelsea, but it’s been a really good start to the season. The question now is, can they kick on?”
