What Mason Mount’s return to training means for Manchester United

Mason Mount has returned to full training with Manchester United to step up his recovery from injury.

The former Chelsea midfielder has not played for United since being forced off in United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham in September.

Mount suffered a blow to the head against Spurs, but a separate injury has kept him out of action since then, missing seven games as a result.

According to The Athletic, Mount is not expected to be rushed back to action but resumed training with the rest of the United squad ahead of Thursday’s Europa League meeting with PAOK.

It comes amid fears Mount would miss a lot of football this season due to injuries, like he did in his debut campaign, ultimately failing to nail down a place in the team. He only made 20 appearances in his first season as a United player, scoring his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw at Brentford in March.

Mount now needs to prove himself under a new manager. He didn’t under the man who brought him to Old Trafford and more questions are about to be asked of him than ever before.

While Mount still has to prove himself at Old Trafford, his return will give the head coach another option in midfield which is needed right now.

The England international is not expected to return to action until after the November international break.

Even if it’s as a substitute because I’m still none the wiser about where Mount would start under Ruben Amorim, if the new manager adapts a 3-4-3 formation at United.

Kobbie Mainoo will be a starter when he returns, potentially alongside Manuel Ugarte, but Casemiro and Christian Eriksen will be competing for places too.

I remember feeling a bit baffled by the Mount signing, but assuming the xperts know best, he’ll eventually come good.
