‘Let him learn his game’ – Manchester United legend hits out at harsh criticism of young star

Former Manchester United winger Gordon Hill has hit out at those criticising Alejandro Garnacho after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Hill has told critics to ‘leave Garnacho alone’ as he develops his game and that mistakes are inevitable at this stage of his career.

Taking to X on Sunday night, Hill wrote: “Leave Garnacho alone and let him learn his game, yes he will make mistakes, and learn from there, I made mistakes but learned my lesson.”

The United legend also explained that he made mistakes too, which is how he learned and eventually became a better player.

United lacked firepower in attack and Garnacho usually provides that. It seems that people are forgetting his tender age when it comes to their high expectations.

Young players can produce special moments but they’re rarely consistent. That is part of the development process as we’ve learned with academy graduates in the past.

Garnacho is like Kobbie Mainoo in that he’s an exceptional talent. He can win football matches and it looks like he’ll reach the top one day. With a bit of patience, I hope that happens at United instead of Real Madrid, but that is the level he aspires to reach.

Garnacho was excellent against Leicester City during the week, but he was unable to replicate that display versus Chelsea.

The youngster received an earful from Casemiro when he gave away possession and refused to track back in the final five minutes.

Casemiro had to cover for Garnacho and got booked for his challenge on Neto.

We already know that the sky is the limit for Garnacho, but he needs to put the yards in if he is to impress new head coach Ruben Amorim.
