Bruno Fernandes has opened the scoring at Old Trafford to give Manchester United a one-goal lead over Chelsea.

Although the goal was short-lived as Chelsea were quick to celebrate, it marked the first opening goal scored by United in our last five matches.

Fernandes scored from the spot after Rasmus Hojlund was fouled by the Chelsea goalkeeper inside the box.

Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy jumped for joy and pumped his fists in front of the South Stand when Fernandes’ penalty hit the back of the net. He knew all about pressure penalties during his own playing career and the explosion of relief and joy around Old Trafford was felt.

Chelsea equalised minutes later through Moises Caicedo to take that feeling of joy away from us. It meant the hard work had to resume if we’re to restore our lead. A set-piece from Cole Palmer was initially flicked away by Casemiro, before Caicedo volleyed an effort into the bottom corner to square the game again.

United have it all to do if they are to secure three points and it doesn’t help that the referee has been week from the first minute. This one could go any way.

It took Bruno Fernandes until this week to score his first goal of the season.

The Portugal international scored a brace in the 5-2 win over Leicester City, including a free-kick which took a lucky deflection.

Our club captain made the scoresheet in consecutive games as he opened the scoring with a penalty kick against Chelsea.

Hopefully this is a sign that Fernandes is back amongst the goals.
