Former Manchester United duo Rio Ferdinand and Luis Nani have had conversations about Manchester United’s new head coach Ruben Amorim.
Following these discussions, Ferdinand believes that the Portuguese coach has charisma and a strong personality that will set him apart from Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday.
Ferdinand has put it upon himself to do research into Amorim’s philosophy as a coach, so he can let United fans know what they can expect when he arrives at Carrington for work on November 11.
One former team-mate of Ferdinand has offered insight into a man he shared the Portugal national team dressing room with. No other than Nani.
However, Nani missed out on the opportunity to play under Amorim at Sporting as he left the club in 2019.
Players respect Ruben Amorim
Ferdinand said: “I spoke to Nani actually the other day, and he said: ‘Rio, whatever you want to talk about, tactics or whatever, the players play for him, they love him, and they respect him’.
“One of the issues I think with Erik ten Hag and what he [Nani] said about Amorim is he’s very straight, very straight and very direct.
“From what I’m hearing, I’m talking to people that have played for [him] but also been around [him] as a human, I think the character and the charisma compared to Erik ten Hag will be the big differentiator, will be the big difference.”
Amorim was announced as United’s head coach on Friday, but fans will have to wait a little while before he takes to the dugout for the first time.
His first game will be away to Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
The 39-year-old will bring his coaches from Sporting, which creates doubt for the future of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is caretaker manager for the next three matches after winning his first 5-2 on Wednesday night.
Amorim had been linked with the likes of West Ham, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City before landing the United job.
